Civilised Roots 2018
Banyan Tree Stump, Linen, Foam
Titled ‘Civilised Roots’, this conceptual furniture design was the result of an Honours study of Australia's past and the role of design in expressing it's complexity. The design sought to appropriate traditional bush furniture with textile tubular upholstery, in order to question how Australia’s history has been framed and categorised, exposing knotty versions of the truth so the audience can sit with the complexity of the past. It was inspired by Jonathan Jones’ “Black Stump” installation and the Campana Bros “Transplastic” installation.
